This week, our Kineret (rising 6th graders) campers reflected on the theme of gratitude. What are you grateful for?

At camp, I am thankful for the meals that are prepared for us every day. I am thankful because I know it takes a lot to prepare 3 meals each day for the whole camp. Sometimes the food isn’t that good, but it’s still food that we get to eat. Also, without food, camp would be miserable because we would just be hungry all day. It takes a lot of people to prepare just one meal at camp, from the farmer who grows the food to the people who cook and serve the food. Another reason that I am thankful for the meals is that when we eat, it brings to whole camp together to eat and socialize. It gives us a chance to talk about our day and how we are feeling. In the end, there are a lot of people who make our meals possible, and we should be thankful for them and the work they do. At the beginning and end of each meal at Camp Harlam, we sing Ha-Motzi and Birkat Ha-Mazon and those let us give thanks to God too.

I believe that rest hour is one of the most important things here at Camp Harlam, and for that, I am thankful. I believe rest hour is important because after a long morning, lots of people want to have a chance to just do what they want to do. The reason that people want to have a chance to just do what they want to do is because a lot of campers like not being told to do an activity that they might not want to do, and it is important for all campers to have this kind of freedom. I know it is still important that we don’t get to choose everything ourselves. That allows us to try new things and stay safe. For the structured time and the unstructured time, I am thankful.

At Camp Harlam, I am thankful that you can be yourself. One reason you can and should be yourself is because if you are not yourself, then who are you? If you’re not anyone, then become yourself at Camp Harlam! Anther reason you can be yourself is because your bunkmates and community become your brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, and best friends. If they become your family, then you can embrace your true self. The last reason you can be yourself is you won’t be judged for how you feel or look. Camp Harlam is very inclusive and supports your opinion, no matter what. This is why you can be yourself at Camp Harlam, and this is why I am thankful.

At Camp Harlam, we are thankful for our counselors. Here are just a few reasons why: they help us get through the day, keep us safe from doing bad things or breaking the rules, and keep us from hurting ourselves. They are also friendly and teach us fun things to do in our free time. For these reasons and more, we need to appreciate our counselors even more.
