At Camp Harlam, you have a unique opportunity to work with campers and fellow staff from all over the country and the world. We take a great deal of pride in the quality of our staff, and all of us play a vital role in the development of each and every one of our campers. It is a vital role that allows staff to guide, support, and influence children for years to come. As a member of this staff, you will serve as role models for all of our campers. What this means is that each of you will be expected to act in a way that sets the proper example for our campers to follow.

Every day, each staff member is involved in planning, teaching, and leading activities for our campers. Developing and implementing programs provides valuable experience for you in the areas of lesson planning, organization, communication, group management, and group leadership.

General Job Description and Qualifications for All Staff Members

In addition to the various specific tasks assigned to each member of the Camp Harlam staff, there are certain expectations and responsibilities that are required of all staff members, regardless of their particular assigned duties. All staff members are expected to satisfy the qualifications and fulfill the responsibilities outlined below.

Job Description for Cabin Counselors

As a Cabin Counselor, you are a primary caretaker for a bunk of campers. You live and follow the schedule of the day with your bunk of campers: actively participating, leading, and engaging with your campers in each program. In a typical day, you may join with your campers in the pool for Free Swim, participate in a period of Athletics, help lead an evening program, and much more.

Responsibilities:

  • Directly responsible for all campers living in one’s assigned cabin: day-to-day involvement with campers as individuals, imparting of camp rules, policies and traditions, help every camper make friends, become acclimated to life at Camp, grow towards his or her potential and become part of the community
  • Responsible for the health, safety, and happiness of ALL campers at ALL times
  • Act as “early-warning system” for campers
  • Ensure campers exercise good hygiene and health practices. Notify appropriate staff members of problems
  • Help campers keep track of belongings
  • Directly responsible for cleanliness and good repair of the cabin
  • Participate regularly and enthusiastically in all Camp programs
  • Teach or assist in electives and specialties. Plan and lead cabin activities, including creating and implementing meaningful nighttime rituals for campers.

Designated Supervisor: Unit Head

Job Description for Specialty Counselors

A Specialty Counselor lives with a bunk of campers and has a specialty area that you lead during the program day. You will spend most of your day leading programs, activities, and lessons for campers of all ages, and will re-join your bunk for dinner and evening programming. You can specialize in a specific Art or Athletic, or in general Adventure, Teva (nature), Lifeguarding. You should have some experience in your specialty area before arriving to camp.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop the necessary lesson plans prior to executing each activity.
  • Set up and clean up for all activity periods.
  • Lead and coordinate activities for all age groups, as assigned by the Department Head, as scheduled for each unit. Maintain daily record of activity lesson plan
  • Maintain a safe and clean activity area
  • Assist in all activity areas within your specialty department as well as within your unit
  • Be available for cabin activities whenever possible
  • Act as general resource for other Camp activities relating to your specialty
  • Exercise good judgment and safety consciousness at all times. Act as role-model for safety with campers
  • Directly responsible for most maintenance and upkeep of facilities and supplies necessary for assigned specialty
  • Participate in other Camp programming. All specialists are assigned to units and cabins and should be with assigned units/cabins when they do not have direct programming responsibilities — especially at meals, song sessions, services, and evening programs. Job Description for Unit Head

As a Unit Head, you are the supervisor of an age cohort of campers and their staff. You will be responsible for the support and leadership development of your Assistant Unit Head, a direct supervisee. You are expected to take a primary role in addressing staff or camper issues, meeting facilitation, and program leading. You will be directly responsible for the training and continued development of your staff supervisees. You will serve as a member of Camp Harlam’s Leadership Team and be called on to fulfill various tasks that may not fit under your direct supervision but ensure camp runs successfully and smoothly.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend meetings as a member of Camp’s Leadership. Help formulate and implement policy. Prepare and submit required materials
  • Directly responsible for planning, preparation and implementation of all evening programs for assigned unit/department; serve as the creative force for unit/department programs, assign staff members to program teams and work closely with specialists planning programs for your unit/department
  • Directly responsible for consistently having unit’s program supply requisitions turned in.
  • Whenever possible, incorporate unit/department staff members in program planning and leadership.
  • Make all site & supply arrangements
  • Coordinate activities of cabins in the unit: cabin activities, staff days off, etc.
  • Act as role model for unit staff. Be a counselor’s counselor, assisting unit/department staff with problems, questions and support
  • Regularly evaluate the performance of unit/department staff members, following the policies of staff evaluation

Job Description for Assistant Unit Head

An Assistant Unit Head is the primary support for a Unit Head in the supervision of an age cohort of campers and their staff. You are the primary contact in management of camper issues and responsible for meeting with Camper Care staff daily. You will be called upon for occasional meeting facilitation and program leading. You will serve as a member of Camp Harlam’s Leadership Team and be called on to fulfill various tasks that may not fit under your direct supervision but ensure camp runs successfully and smoothly.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as member of the camp’s assistant supervisor staff, attend regular meetings, be involved in the implementation of camp policies as they affect campers and staff members and assist in the enforcement of these policies
  • Be a positive role model for counselors and campers in unit and in the general camp community
  • Act in the capacity as a mentor for the staff, one to whom a staff member can bring their bunk/program area problems, successes, challenges and questions
  • Act as a mediator and/or guide during disputes
  • During staff training, help teach staff their responsibilities and skills they need for the summer
  • Participate in daily meetings with Camper Care staff and supervise camper behavior management plans
  • Support the Unit Supervisor in coordinating days off for staff in Unit
  • Develop new and innovative ways of having fun and recognizing staff in your Unit and implement them with your Unit Supervisor
  • Correct or reprimand Unit staff as soon as practical (in private), for actions that put health and safety of a camper at risk
  • Know the names of all the campers and staff in the unit and be knowledgeable about their needs
  • Coordinate the activities of cabins in the unit with the Unit Head

Job Description for Chavurah Senior Counselor

A Chavurah Senior Counselor works in partnership with the Chavurah Unit Head, Camper Care Staff, and supervising Assistant Director in the facilitation of the Chavurah program experience. Chavurah Senior Counselor lives with Chavurah campers and serves as a primary caretaker. You will participate in daily meetings with Camper Care staff to report and strategize on camper dynamics and observed behaviors. You will lead programming and teach program writing/leading to your campers. You will specialize in the leadership of a specific facet of the Chavurah experience for your campers and co-senior counselors.

Responsibilities:

  • Directly responsible for all campers living in Chavurah village: day-to-day involvement with campers as individuals, imparting of camp rules, policies and traditions, help every camper make friends, become acclimated to life at Camp, grow towards his or her potential and become part of the community
  • Participate in daily Camper Care meetings
  • Responsible for the health, safety, and happiness of ALL campers at ALL times
  • Act as “early-warning system” for campers
  • Ensure campers exercise good hygiene and health practices. Notify appropriate staff members of problems

Job Description for Department Supervisor

Department Supervisors are responsible for the programming, facilities, and staff in a specific program area. You will partner with Camp Harlam Professional Staff in curriculum development and lead your staff in facilitation of lessons and activities. You will be directly responsible for the support and continued development of your staff supervisees and, when applicable, will partner with external trainers for the pre-camp training of your staff. You should have previous skill and experience in your department’s specialty. You will serve as a member of Camp Harlam’s Leadership Team and be called on to fulfill various tasks that may not fit under your direct supervision but ensure camp runs successfully and smoothly.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend meetings as a member of Camp’s Leadership Team. Help formulate and implement policy.
  • Prepare and submit required paperwork
  • Directly responsible for planning, preparation and implementation of all programs for assigned department; serve as the creative force for department programs, assign staff members to program teams and work closely with specialty counselors planning programs for your department

Job Description for Assistant Department Supervisor

An Assistant Department Supervisor is the primary support for a Department Supervisor in the supervision of a department area and its staff. You will be called upon for regular program leading and occasional meeting facilitation. You assist Department Supervisor in the ongoing training and development of a department area’s staff. You should have previous skill and experience in your department’s specialty. You will serve as a member of Camp Harlam’s Leadership Team and be called on to fulfill various tasks that may not fit under your direct supervision but ensure camp runs successfully and smoothly.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as member of the camp’s assistant supervisor staff, attend regular meetings, be involved in the implementation of camp policies as they affect campers and staff members and assist in the enforcement of these policies

Job Description for Gesher (Counselor-in-Training) Program Supervisor

The Gesher Program Supervisor is responsible for the care, support, and training of Camp Harlam’s future staff members, the Counselors-in-Training. As the Gesher Supervisor, you will develop curriculum and facilitate daily programming that trains 17-year-old Gesher participants to become counselors and leaders. You will also support Gesher Assistant Program Supervisors and provide regular feedback in their development as leaders. You will be responsible for regular meeting facilitation and program leading. You will observe and provide individual feedback and coaching for each participant. You will serve as a member of Camp Harlam’s Leadership Team and be called on to fulfill various tasks that may not fit under your direct supervision but ensure camp runs successfully and smoothly.

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate with supervising Assistant Director and other members of Professional Staff about notable events/incidents/developments in Gesher program
  • Work with Gesher Assistant Supervisors to create and implement leadership-training programs for CITs
  • Spend ample time in the Bayit, observing CITs and helping to establish and enforce Bayit rules to ensure general upkeep of the Bayit
  • Help to plan and coordinate CIT outings
  • Supervise Assistant Gesher Supervisors: provide feedback, both through weekly check-ins and formal written evaluations at the end of each session
  • Assist Assistant Supervisors in different areas of responsibility to supervise, giving support and guidance
  • Help to establish and enforce general CIT rules and procedures
  • Handle scheduling responsibilities for Gesher program and Gesher assistant programming

You will observe and provide individual feedback and coaching for each participant. You will serve as a member of Camp Harlam’s Leadership Team and be called on to fulfill various tasks that may not fit under your direct supervision but ensure camp runs successfully and smoothly.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with Gesher Supervisor to create and implement leadership-training programs for CITs
  • Supervise CITs throughout the summer, both within Gesher programming and CITs work in unit/department
  • Provide feedback for CITs through check-ins and formal written evaluations
  • Live in Bayit (CIT housing) and establish close but appropriate relationships with all members of Gesher program, establish and enforce Bayit rules and ensure cleanliness and upkeep of living spaces
  • Help plan and lead Gesher programming
  • Lead and facilitate one of several Gesher “committees” — Banquet, Variety Show, CIT programming, gear and ruach
  • Be present and engaged in all CIT programming, whether leading or participating
  • Communicate openly and consistently with Gesher Supervisor about any CIT issues — have an “ear to the street” in terms of what’s happening in the Bayit and among the CITs

Job Description for Camp K’ton Supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Strong background and experience in camping, education, and/or related fields
  • Experience working with small children (preferred)
  • Evidence of leadership skill and capacity
  • Desire and ability to work with children and adults in camp setting
  • Ability to creatively plan & schedule programs and activities, and to maximize the skills & talents of staff members
  • Ability to give & take constructive criticism
  • A college graduate (preferred) or rising college senior
  • Must be self-starter and able to work with minimum supervision
  • Must have leadership skills, ability to motivate, manage, and counsel

Responsibilities

  • Plan and prepare a schedule and curriculum for the Camp K’ton program
  • Act as the primary liaison with Camp K’ton parents – ensure they have the necessary information about the schedule and address with them any concerns or issues that arise
  • Regularly evaluate the performance of Camp K’ton staff members, following the policies of staff evaluation
  • Ensure the Camp K’ton space is kept organized and clean
  • Coordinate with other Leadership Team members about K’ton activity periods
  • Whenever possible, incorporate K’ton Specialty Counselors in program planning and leadership
  • Occasionally provide evening coverage of K’ton campers
  • Attend meetings as a member of camp’s Leadership Team and act as a role model for all staff

 

Designated Supervisor: Assistant Director

Job Description for Staff Engagement Supervisor

The Staff Engagement Supervisor works in partnership with the Professional Staff in creating a safe, supportive, and fun working environment for staff. You are responsible for planning and facilitating events for staff members. You will have regular check-ins with staff members. You will conduct weekly staff engagement surveys and synthesize responses into a weekly report for Professional Staff review. You serve as a point person for the staff experience: responding to feedback, supporting individuals and groups, and working to assist staff feel home at Camp Harlam. You will serve as a member of Camp Harlam’s Leadership Team and be called on to fulfill various tasks that may not fit under your direct supervision but ensure camp runs successfully and smoothly.

Responsibilities:

  • Build staff community:
    • Partner with professional staff to plan and execute community building activities beginning with pre-camp training and throughout the summer
    • Create, manage and circulating a master staff activities calendar
    • Planning and organizing activities for staff that are available in camp every night (such as in athletics, arts, outdoor adventure, etc.) that may be facilitated by others
    • Develop a plan for “on camp” days off
  • Help support staff with their needs to better enable them to effectively perform their duties:
    • Help staff members navigate challenges related to:
    • Time off
    • Understanding camp policies and procedures as they relate to staff
    • Dealing with supervisory relationships (such as approaching a unit head or director)
    • Quality-of-life matters that may require a conversation with the camper care team
  • Serve as liaison to Professional Staff in their efforts to provide a fulfilling professional experience:
    • Keep your “fingers on the pulse” of the staff, keeping professional staff informed of your observations
    • Aid in communicating schedule, program, policy and other changes to staff
    • Facilitate a weekly staff survey and report to the professional staff the results (provided by E21)
  • Support overall program of camp:
    • Work in partnership with the Program Supervisor to assist with special programs, all-camp events and other projects and support staff as they develop meaningful evening programs and cabin activities

Job Description for Camper Care Staff

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in field of child development, education, social work, psychology, or related field
  • Professional experience or personal knowledge of camping and/or related field
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience working directly with children

 

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Professional Staff, Unit Leaders and Health Center staff to monitor the overlap of the physical and emotional wellbeing of campers
  • Assist staff members with challenging camper situations and provide ongoing support to staff to respond to campers behavioral, emotional, and mental health needs
  • Provide on-going guidance and support to staff when responding to situations that arise with campers, including camper adjustment issues and/or separation anxieties, bullying, teasing, homesickness, moments of sadness, or other mental health concerns
  • Maintain communication with families both proactively and reactively
  • Provide on-going support to staff in determining the appropriate response to campers’ behavioral and emotional health needs
  • Create proper documentation of Camper Care issues and relevant communications with parents/staff
  • Provide support and supervisions to children as needed in the Chill Zone (sensory space at camp)
  • Meet daily with Unit Leaders to review daily camper reports and monitor the progress of campers and groups of campers.
  • Provide ongoing assessment of individual campers

Designated Supervisor: Camper Care and Enrollment Manager

Job Description for Operations Supervisor

The Operations Supervisor supports and supervisors our Operations Staff and the daily operations of camp. These responsibilities include but are not limited to; setting up and breaking down chairs/tables for events, moving items and building items around camp, maintenance and upkeep of facilities and supplies and to support the A/V efforts in camp. You will maintain the maintenance and a/v requests and assign your team jobs as necessary.   You are responsible for each staff member you supervisor for ongoing support/feedback and evaluations throughout the summer. You will serve as a member of Camp Harlam’s Leadership Team and be called on to fulfill various tasks that may not fit under your direct supervision but ensure camp runs successfully and smoothly.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the Operation Specialty Counselors in Operational responsibilities including but not limited to setting up and breaking down chairs/tables for events, building furniture as needed, filling maintenance requests, and moving items around camp as needed
  • Assist in supervising additional operation areas including, office, maintenance, transportation, etc.
  • Maintain an organized ledger of A/V requests, inventory, and other necessary equipment
  • Maintain an organized ledger of maintenance requests
  • Supervise the teams that set up and break down camp during pre/post camp (A/Z Team)
  • Attend all Supervisor and Leadership meetings

Job Description for Operations Specialty Counselors

An Operation Staff member lives in staff housing. Responsibilities include A/V and maintenance support throughout camp. These include set up and breakdowns of microphones, speakers, projectors, screens. Special events support including facility setup (chairs, tables, etc.). Daily you will be fulfilling maintenance requests and supporting the program team. The operations staff work closely with all of the Special Projects Supervisor and other support staff. Experience with A/V equipment is recommended but not required.

Responsibilities:

  • Set-up and break down of all A/V requests for camp programs, evening programs, concerts, plays, etc.
  • Maintain an organized ledger of A/V requests, inventory, and other necessary equipment
  • Assist in Operational responsibilities including but not limited to driving a camp vehicle out of camp for errands, setting up and breaking down chairs/tables for events, building furniture as needed, moving items around camp as needed
  • Act as general resource for other camp activities relating to Operations & A/V
  • Participate in other camp programming as is practical
  • Exercise good judgment and safety consciousness at all times. Act as role-model for safety with campers

Designated Supervisor: Operations Supervisor

Job Description for Special Projects Supervisor

The Special Projects Supervisor manages and supervises the housekeepers by creating a schedule and ensuring that they are completing the job appropriately. You will also facilitate laundry for the entire camp and towel service for the pools and lakes. This includes preparing and distributing bags, laundry collection and drop off process, and working with all to make the process successful. Other responsibilities include organizing snacks, stoneg, faculty and supervisor dinner and working with our Food Service Director on ordering. You will develop and execute leadership team schedules for leadership evening rotations, milk squad and leading the meals. The Special Project Supervisor and The Operations Supervisor work closely to support each other and the areas that they supervisor. You will serve as a member of Camp Harlam’s Leadership Team and be called on to fulfill various tasks that may not fit under your direct supervision but ensure camp runs successfully and smoothly.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the Operation Specialty Counselors in responsibilities including but not limited to organizing and executing special meals in and out of camp including snack, milk squad and trips
  • Supervise housekeepers by creating a schedule and ensure that they are completing the job appropriately, including checking stock levels of all inventory and replace when appropriate

Along with the FSD, the Head Chef will:
    • Maintain inventory of food and supplies.
    • Order food and kitchen supplies consistent with menus, enrollment counts and camp needs.

Direct oversight and primary responsibility within key areas:

  • Specialty Foods #1: Campers/Staff with Food Allergies & Dietary Restrictions
    • With necessary understanding and expertise of contemporary challenges for individuals with these concerns, the SFL will be expected to be an informed and resourceful member of the camp staff with respect to food allergies and/or dietary restrictions.
    • Gathering of all available information and making certain that necessary lists/schedules/details are shared and accessible for all parties necessary.
    • Planning and coordination (with the Food Service staff) for the provision of appropriate meals/snacks for all campers/staff that are identified as having specialty food needs.
    • Assistance in the creation of systems to maintain quality and efficiency in the delivery of specialty foods to all campers/staff identified as having specialty food needs.
    • Coordination and communication with internal resources (such as Health Center staff, Camper Care and campers/staff) to assure that all necessary individuals are aware of systems in place and can support their success.
    • Communication (during the summer camp season) with external resources (such as vendors to discuss ingredients) and camp families to provide updates, answer/ask questions, and provide high-quality service.

Support and success as a liaison with key constituents and stakeholders:

  • Food Service Staff – The SFL will assist with the communication, explanation, support, direction and/or evaluation of the staff (most specifically within the areas of Specialty Food preparation and systems).
  • Health Center Staff – With the Health Center Supervisor, the SFL will ensure that information, systems and protocols related to campers/staff with any specialty food needs that in any way relate to possible concerns for the medical staff and/or the health/safety of anyone at camp are shared and coordinated.
  • Camper Care Team – The Camper Care staff will be a source of support for campers/staff/families throughout the summer, so the SFL will benefit from active communication and coordination with these professionals, especially with regards to communication with families and any identified camper concerns that arise while performing their work.
  • Professional Staff – If any concerns arise with campers, staff, families and/or any areas of camp (within or without of the food service area), the SFL should feel free to communicate and coordinate directly with members of our camp’s year-round leadership staff.
